Overview of Ph.D. Curriculum The Ph.D. curriculum in industrial and system engineering with a concentration in human factors engineering and ergonomics builds on the M.S. curriculum and assumes the graduate student has already had behavioral research experience with a thesis. This degree is heavily oriented toward independent research and the development of expertise in a particular area of ergonomics. This expertise is demonstrated by in-depth interdisciplinary coursework and dissertation research. Course Exemptions Students entering the program with an M.S. from another university can petition substitution of equivalent courses. This petition must be approved by the Virginia Tech instructor for the course(s) in question and the student's graduate advisory committee. R.A. and T.A. Fellowships Research Assistantships (RA), Teaching Assistantships (TA), and Fellowships are available for students seeking a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering with a human factors engineering and ergonomics concentration. Students interested in research assistantships should contact the faculty to discuss available opportunities. All applicants will be considered for the option of TA and Fellowship positions, with priority given to applications received early (before February 1). More information on financial aid for graduate students is available at the Graduate School.Program of Study
